Making its first state-title game appearance since 1995, the Yorktown High School football team came up short Friday afternoon, falling to unbeaten Section 6 champion West Seneca 14-6 in the Class A title game at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome.

Yorktown (13-1) led 6-0 after the first quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Brett Makar midway through the period, ending a drive in which Makar had 12 carries. The extra-point kick was blocked.

West Seneca (13-0) went ahead 7-6 early in the second quarter on a 1-yard TD run by Bryan Ball followed by the PAT kick.

The score remained 7-6 until West Seneca added a touchdown late in the fourth quarter after recovering a Yorktown fumble.

Yorktown last won a championship in 1994, when it took its second straight championship. State title games were first played in 1993.

Section 1, which includes Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties, still has a shot to come away with a state title this weekend.

The Pleasantville High School football team makes its first state championship game appearance on Sunday, Nov. 26, playing Chenango Forks of Binghamton in the Section B title game, which begins at noon at the Carrier Dome.
