Hendrick Hudson Schools Will Remain Closed Friday

MONTROSE, N.Y. - There will be no classes in the Hendrick Hudson School District on Friday as the effects of Hurricane Sandy continue to be felt.

Schools Superintendent Brian Monahan said parents should check back Sunday afternoon and Monday morning, to find out whether school will be in session Monday.

"It's definitely not automatic," said Monahan, "We still have two schools without power and you know what the roads are like," he said. Furnace Woods Elementary School and Blue Mountain Middle School did not have power, as of Thursday.

"If it's obvious the schools can't open, we'll announce early," Monahan said. The superintendent also said he understands that both parents and students are anxious to reopen schools.

"I'm going to be here Sunday, looking at the situation," Monahan said.

Thursday afternoon, Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi, said in a news release that she is pressing Con Edison to restore power to the two schools. "I am constantly telling them this is a priority," she said.

Cortlandt Town officials said Con Edison estimated power would be restored to the entire town by Nov. 9. Puglisi said there are currently two crews working on power restoration in Cortlandt, and 200 in Westchester, for 43 municipalities altogether.

"Cortlandt is one of the largest and I said we need to have more than two crews in our community," Puglisi said in the release.
