PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Founding Group will once again submit a proposal to the New York State Education Department for approval of the proposed Guardian Academy Charter School of Peekskill.
If the school is granted a charter it would provide the only educational option other than the traditional district school system for Peekskill families. There are only two charter schools in Westchester County — Amani Public Charter School in Mount Vernon and the Charter School for Educational Excellence in Yonkers.
The Guardian Academy plans a “rigorous yet flexible curriculum that presumes high expectations but, also realizes that tailored supports are often needed for scholars to reach that high bar,” says Audrey Warn, the Lead Applicant on the project.
A unique co-teaching design with two general education teachers, one certified special education teacher and one certified English language learner teacher will make up grade level teams will help fulfill this mission.
"We believe it isn’t enough to be successful academically,” said Warn. “We really want our scholars to develop impeccable character — the traits necessary for success in life.”
If the state Education Department grants a charter, the school plans to open in August 2015 with two classes each of kindergarten and first grade, adding a grade each year until they reach eight grades.
