State and local police were dispatched to an Abbey Avenue home in Maybrook on Tuesday morning, where there was a reported domestic incident. During the incident, officials confirmed that Village of Maybrook Police Chief Arnold “Butch” Amthor was shot in the shoulder and taken to a hospital in Newburgh for treatment on non-life-threatening injuries.
An aerial and K-9 Unit were active at the scene, and state police brought in a negotiator to help with the investigation.
“Butch is a true gentleman who has dedicated his life to law enforcement,” police said in a statement released on Tuesday. “I ask Orange County residents to keep Chief Amthor and his family in their prayers. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work and how deserving of our support and encouragement law enforcement is.”
