The day began shortly before 2:30 a.m. when firefighters were dispatched to put out a brush fire at the town’s compost plant near Greenwood Street. Then, at 9:11 a.m., they responded to Kmart on Downing Drive where units extinguished a dumpster fire with a single handline.
An hour later, Yorktown firefighters got an assist from the Bedford Fire Department’s FASTeam, for a reported structure fire on Hickory Street. Upon arrival, crews reported that a closet had caught fire, prompting the homeowner to evacuate with her child before calling firefighters. Burned items were removed from the scene and crews assisted with clean-up before clearing the scene.
At 10:40 a.m., a second fire alarm went off at K-Mart, unrelated to the dumpster fire, which turned out to be negative. Shortly before 11:15 a.m., as units were clearing that call, units were dispatched to Hanover Street, where a car was reportedly on fire next to a structure. First responders found that a car had caught fire, and a small brush fire had started and was extinguished before their arrival. The cause of that fire is still under investigation.
Lastly, at approximately 7:15 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area near marker 11 on the Taconic State Parkway, where a car had been involved in an accident and caught fire. Crews used foam operations to extinguish the fire, due to a ruptured gas tank that was burning. Units cleared the scene and no injuries were reported.
