Charlotte Scott, 79, Longtime Peekskill Resident

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Charlotte A. Scott, a longtime resident of Peekskill, died July 26 at New York University Hospital in New York City. She was 79. 

Scott was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Charlottesville, Va., to Willie and Gladys Ellis Humes Morton. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Orange, Va., where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. 

Locally, she was an active member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and the old gospel chorus, became an usher and a missionary and helped in the kitchen. 

Later in life, Scott served as chair of the condolence committee and as a member of the usher's ministry for 47 years, missionary and gospel chorus and hospitality ministry. She was also a member of Eastern Stars and Elks and the Progressive Women's Club of Peekskill. Scott enjoyed cooking, singing and helping other people. 

She is survived by a daughter, Vanessa Pittman, of Peekskill; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a goddaughter and her longtime companion, James R. Hadley. 

Wake services will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m., with burial at Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor. Jeremiah Edwards Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
