What's Happening in Peekskill This Weekend

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- The second annual Juneteenth parade celebration leads a weekend full of events in the city.

Friday, June 15

  • The Brighton Beat at BeanRunner Cafe: 7-10 p.m. The Brighton Beat have been playing music together for years. Realizing their common love for jazz and Afrobeat, they decided to set forth on an adventurous path, writing their own interpretation of Afrobeat-funk in today's modern world.   • Chris Fox and Mojo Monde at 12 Grapes: 9:30 p.m. -12:30 a.m. Mojo Monde is not only known for soulful original music but the band also is an interpreter of others' music as well, whether playing 1960s British invasion tunes or 1970s funk.   • Jiro Dreams of Sushi at The Paramount: 7:30 p.m. The film is the story of 85-year-old Jiro Ono of Japan, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. $9 general admission.1008 Brown St. (914) 739-233.

Saturday, June 16

  • Peekskill Juneteenth Parade:  This year's event, which celebrates African-American emancipation from slavery, begins at 1:30 p.m. with a proclamation ceremony at the AME Zion Church on Park Street and a VIP reception. The parade through the downtown will begin at 2 p.m. starting at the church. The all-day celebration will continue at Riverfront Green Park with an extensive lineup of gospel, jazz and hip-hop music from 4-8 p.m. This year's grand marshals are former county legislator Lois Bronz and actor Michael Williams.
  • TrioKinesis: CD Release Party at BeanRunner Cafe:  7:30-10:30 p.m. The group plays with an uncommon unity, a big full sound that respects the great roots of jazz and reaches beyond it to create its own unique sound. Admission is $10. 201 S. Division St. (914) 737-1701
  • Steve Wexler and the Top Shelf at 12 Grapes: 9:30 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. This 11-piece band is powered by original arrangements and a talented lineup of professional musicians. Admission is a $15 entertainment fee or $10 with dinner entree.12 N. Division St. (914) 737-6624.

Sunday, June 17

  • Anna Bolena at The Paramount: 1 p.m. The opera tells the tale of Henry the 8th and the women who are his doomed wives, Jane Seymour and Anne Boleyn. The performance was filmed at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Italy. This production is performed with piano, not orchestra, due to an orchestral strike. Running time is 220 minutes, including one intermission. 1008 Brown St. (914) 739-233.
  • Father's Day Kids' Open Mic at 12 Grapes: 6-8 p.m. A showcase for talented musicians and singers age 17 and under. Sign-up begins at 5:30 p.m. Kids under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. As a special for Father's Day, they will be offering a $19 two-course dinner deal that includes steak, salmon, chicken and more, plus a $10 burger menu. 12 N. Division St. (914) 737-6624.
  • LA and the Hit Squad at BeanRunner Cafe: 5-8 p.m. LA has performed with the legendary Intruders, as well as on many Motown revue assignments. He currently is the bass/ baritone singer and co-founder of "Tradition", a classic soul cover singing group. He also hosts his own "Quite Storm" show on 91.1 WOSS in New York.
