Putnam Valley Demolishing Zombie Home

PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- Putnam Valley officials are discussing demolishing a "zombie" home on Orchard Street after the owners have failed to take any steps to bring it up to code standards, according to the Putnam Examiner.

The home, at 31 Orchard St., will likely be torn down in the near future following a unanimous vote by the Town Council on Wednesday, Feb. 22, said the Examiner.

Councilwoman Jackie Annabi said the town board had given the homeowner and mortgage holders a chance to either repair or tear down the home but "nothing has been done," the Examiner reported.

Annabi pointed to the fact that the home hasn't been boarded up and that nothing has been done to secure it, said the Examiner.

Supervisor Sam Oliverio said the city could not take any actions until 120 days from Dec. 7, 2016, the date in which a notice of violation was served by the city.

An attorney representing the mortgage holder said the former owner had tried to board up the home but was stopped by the current owner, Ralph Capodieci, the Examiner said.

Oliverio, who commented that he would rather see zombie homes repaired, believes the damage is so bad, the home will need to be knocked down, added the Examiner.
