Peekskill Man Mugged Woman, Stole Her Purse

A city man was arrested Sunday, May 22 after attacking a woman and stealing her purse on South Street.

Police say Joseph Morey, 36, assaulted a 56-year-old woman on the 700 block of South Street at 4:45 p.m. and stole her purse. Morey was picked up a short distance from the scene by Police Officer John Kolesar, who saw that he fit the description given by a witness to the incident, according to Peekskill Police spokesman Lt. Eric Johansen.

A resident called to report the incident from their cell phone and our response was less than a minute,” Johansen said.

The unidentified victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Peekskill EMS volunteers, according to police.

Johansen said there was some indication that the incident was drug-related but declined to elaborate further.

Morey was charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree assault, both felonies. He was held for arraignment in city court without bail.
