PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – During this school year, Founder and Executive Director of Youth Voices Center Inc. Michael Arterberry will facilitate 27 "Power of Peace" workshops at Peekskill High School to address leadership skills, conflict resolution, teamwork, diversity, understanding and decision making.

The program, an experiential workshop that strives to allow young people to use their voice in expressing personal concerns, fears and dreams, has been proven successful in multiple school districts, including New Rochelle, Port Chester and Schenectady. The workshops are designed to help young people understand life, responsibilities and challenges and to provide them with the necessary tools to succeed, take action and create a positive impact.

Working with the administration of the Peekskill City School District, the center can help adolescents living in the diverse community dispel negative stereotypes of themselves and others and work toward futures free of violence and full of promise.

Superintendent David Fine already has witnessed the positive impact of the workshops with small pockets of teens who have experienced them.

“When students stay focused in school, consciously make good choices, deliberately take care of each other, the end result is improved school attendance and more positive attitudes,” Fine said. “This is an exciting and important opportunity for teachers and staff as well to build and strengthen relationships with students and coworkers, improving communication and creating an atmosphere of community.”

Arterberry has been a social worker and counselor for 23 years. He was awarded the 2010 USA Network’s Characters Unite Award for exceptional commitment to combating prejudice and discrimination while increasing tolerance and acceptance within the community. He also is the recipient of the 2014 100 Men of Color Award for leadership in education, government, mentorship, entrepreneurial success and community service.
