PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Bedbugs found on a student at Peekskill Middle School Tuesday were removed, and school officials say the building has been cleared by exterminators.

A press release sent out Thursday said appropriate steps with regard to contacting pest control, bagging items and using trained dogs to search for additional bed bugs were followed and all areas targeted by the dogs were cleaned, steamed and bagged.

As of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the building was deemed clear of bedbugs by the exterminators, according to the release.

“The situation was handled quickly, firmly and responsibly,” said Dr. David Fine, principal of Peekskill Middle School. “This is an unfortunate incident and our safety is paramount with respect to our children, homes, and families. The matter is being taken very seriously as we continue to contact outside agencies and the city with regard to this issue and possible solutions for when they occur.”

A pest control company is visiting the school again Thursday to review the area and will conduct a second steaming/cleaning, and there will be periodic visits from the company over the next few weeks to ensure the continued absence of the bugs in the school, the statement added.

The residence of the child is also being visited by pest control, as recommended by the school and agreed to by the child’s family.
