PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- The Peekskill Daily Voice is publishing candidate profiles for those running in local elections on Nov. 5.

Republican Leslie Detres is running for Peekskill Common Council. She is a school psychologist for Oakside School in the Peekskill School District and is running against Democratic candidate Cyndi McKenzie.

Why are you running for office? I am an individual who wants and cares to be involved in helping and getting things done that I care about. I am a true believer; if you want something in life you go and make it happen. I want to make a difference here in Peekskill.

As a Girl Scout co-leader and a school psychologist here in the Peekskill School District I have a greater interest now in helping to shape the policies and decision for Peekskill. I want to be directly involved in helping ensure recreation, wellness assets, parks, community spirit are maintained and improved. I would like to build trust and safety in the community as part of a larger effort to continue enhancing our small town.

How long have you lived in Peekskill for? I have lived in Peekskill for 13 years now. I moved here from the Bronx where I was born and raised.

What do you love about Peekskill? Growing up in the Bronx, I wanted to live in a place that was safer thus, I moved to Peekskill. I love the diversity of people that live in Peekskill and it makes me feel just as I did growing up in the Bronx. I also love that Peekskill has a water front and whenever I need to sit down and relax I have a place to go that’s not far from my home with my family.

What makes it the best place to live in Westchester? The diversity of its citizens, parks and recreation that are available, the proximity to the water front, easy access to transportation in and from the city and the reasonable cost of real estate prices are what make Peekskill the best place to live in Westchester.

Do you have favorite restaurants or favorite places to shop? My favorite restaurants to dine, is Pastel located at the beach shopping Center; the food is great and it has a family warm atmosphere, as well as Rubens which bring me back to some of my cultural roots and the Peekskill Brewery, great food and ambiance for my husband and I just to relax and many more.

What does Peekskill mean to you? Peekskill is my life. My children are being raised here and I just want the best for them, I also want the best for all residents of Peekskill. Peekskill is a place where you can call my home town which is rich in history!
