Peekskill Police Chief Eric Johansen plans to retire from the department on March 3 in order to take another position nearby.
Johansen, who has been with the department for 24 years, five of those as chief, said Wednesday he couldn't name the position he is taking, but did say it was bittersweet to leave his hometown force.
"It's kind of sad to leave," Johansen said. "But I'm also looking forward to a new challenge."
Johansen said he leaves the department in good shape, and in good hands.
"We have such a professional and dedicated group of police officers that I'm so proud to have worked with over the years," he said. "I don't think the department has ever been in better shape with true professionals working hard every day."
Johansen did say his new position is in the region and is a good opportunity for him at this stage in his career.
