The Westchester Department of Public Safety and other police agencies are participating in a ‘STOP-DWI’ enforcement campaign that started earlier this month.
This initiative includes roving patrols as well as sobriety checkpoints that will be conducted by the County police in local communities and on parkways.
County Police will also join forces with municipal police departments and New York State Police to increase enforcement efforts in certain targeted areas.
“In Westchester, we have seen first-hand the devastating consequences that occur when people drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Innocent lives have been lost and people have suffered permanent, life-changing injuries. Every DWI arrest is a potential tragedy averted,” says County Executive George Latimer.
The County Police will increase its own enforcement of DWI laws around the Bronx River, Cross County, Saw Mill and Hutchinson River parkways.
Earlier this month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that November would be declared ‘STOP-DWI’ month throughout the state. A statistic from Westchester County cites a 74% decrease in fatalities resulting from alcohol-related crashes on New York’s roadways since the program's inception in 1981.
