Westchester County is in the middle of a heat wave and Peekskill officials think the worst might occur Friday. The Peekskill Community Center at 4 Nelson Ave. will open from 1 to 9 p.m., Friday, as a Cooling Center for residents who need to get out of the burning temperatures.
"We're urging residents to keep hydrated and to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly," said City Manager Anthony Ruggiero, in a news release.
Ruggiero noted in the release that the Spray Park at Lepore Park and the public pool are "both available for residents looking to keep cool."
Jeff Miller, who operates Peekskill's National Weather Station, said Thursday that the city has experienced more than 18 days of temperatures above 90 degrees with precipitation far below average. But Miller said precipitation is on the way this weekend.
"Peekskill reached 96 [on Thursday], so this latest round of hot weather gave us 92 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, 94 on Wednesday and 96 on Thursday," Miller said. "Just read NOAA's [The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] summary and we should be the same or a little warmer Friday. We'll see if we make the 98 mark yet. Then watch for Saturday afternoon and evening for any developing storms."
