The Westchester County Health Department issued a heat advisory earlier this week with temperatures expected to hover in the mid-90s in Westchester County until the weekend. With the heat wave in full effect, hospital doctors say there are several steps residents can take to prevent heat stroke and dehydration.

“Of course, when the temperatures climb this high, we are worried about heat related illness,’’ said Dr. Ron Nutovits, chaimanr of emergency medicine at the hospital, in a press release. “The best scenario is prevention, and we are asking everyone to take precautions against heat stroke and dehydration.’’

Nutovits said, if possible, people should stay indoors to keep cool at home, the mall or at several Westchester cooling centers that have opened this week.

“If you must be outdoors, stay in the shade and drink plenty of water," Nutovits said in the release. "Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages as they can worsen dehydration."

Nutovits added it especially is important for children and the elderly to heed those warnings as they are more prone to heat stroke and dehydration.
