Church officials are citing declining numbers in areas that are oversaturated with parishes as the primary reason for the restructuring. Parishes that have a history of turning to the archdiocese for financial support are likely targets, similar to the downsizing plan that took place in 2007, The Wall Street Journal said.

The archdiocese, which covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and much of Westchester County, said it spends approximately $40 million per year to keep financially strapped parishes afloat, according to The Wall Street Journal.
