Alleged Peekskill Assault under Investigation, Still Unreported

PEEKSKILL, NY – An allegation of assault on a city teen is being investigated by police even though the victim has yet to file a report.

Resident Juanita Dunlap told common council members that her daughter, a student at Peekskill High School, was physically assaulted along with a friend by a male student on Main Street on the way home from the homecoming dance at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.

Dunlap claimed when her daughter went to report the incident to police they would not take her seriously and that they were rude to her. “No arrests have been made and I’m very upset,” Dunlap said.

Dunlap believed that police hadn’t treated her fairly since she criticized the police on News 12 earlier in the year over how children were told to stay off streets and sidewalks while riding bikes and told a reporter she believed the police behavior was racially motivated.

Peekskill Police Spokesman Eric Johansen said that no report had been filed by the family as of Thursday afternoon and that the accusations against the officers were being investigated.

“Her complaint of rude conduct on behalf of the police department is being investigated," Johansen said. "However, at this time that complaint has not been substantiated.”

Dunlap also said that she had contacted the mayor’s secretary about the incident but never got a response. Mayor Mary Foster said she knew nothing of the incident and said that she did not have a secretary, so the person Dunlap talked to was likely in the city manager’s office. Foster said she would look into why she never got the message and said she would discuss the matter with the police chief.
