We seem to be off by a year, a week and an hour. My calendar has the event for 2013, April 20th, 12:00 to 4:00, and I'm starting the festivities with a set of original songs. View Comment
Another reminder of the importance of keeping our water supply safe. The NY Watershed is in grave danger with natural gas companies moving in for hydrolic fracturing, and a largely sympathetic government tempted by the promise of economic growth. It is a devil's bargain, however, as the boom turns to bust when the land is rendered unlivable because the water has become carcinogenic for several generations to come. View Comment
The main confusion about bees is the idea that having more of them in an area will result in a higher chance of being stung. There are only two ways you will be stung by a honeybee; one if you step barefoot on a bee while it is pollinating a clover blossom and the other is if you attack the hive. Honey bees are the proverbial "don't bother them and they won't bother you" variety. These are the kind of bees that lose their lives if they use their stinger, which is not the case for other kinds of bees, hornets, wasps, yellow jackets and the like. Honeybees would rather not sacrifice themselves unless they had to protect the hive or are being crushed by a foot. View Comment
For Ossining, it's an idea whose time has come, and Ossining village needs to bring its ordinances into alignment with the desires of the community. Bees are not a threat or a nuisance to anyone, and hosting them is a benefit to the ecological strength of the neighborhood. The only issue that could ever come up is when a hive is robust enough to split; the queen takes 3/4 of the hive in a swarm to find another home, and for a period of time may take up residence in a neighbors tree. But even then they keep to themselves and only serve to pollinate, to the delight of gardeners everywhere. View Comment
