Prep On West-Bound TZB Lanes Revs Up As Opening Date Nears

Preparations are in high gear as construction crews race to open the first section of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge on Aug. 25, including paving surfaces and testing electronic systems.

According to Tappan Zee Constructors work wearing surface preparations and paving has progressed from the Rockland approach to the main span. Work will continue across the Westchester approach in the coming weeks.

Crews are also continuing the installation of structural steel sections and stay cables on the eastbound main span, with connections to the Westchester and Rockland approaches completed Friday. To date, 76 of the eastbound span’s 96 stay cables have been installed.

Other preparations including the testing of the westbound bridge’s electronic systems in the coming weeks. Backup generator testing will take place near the Westchester landing between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, and Tuesday, Aug. 8, with sound barriers in place.

Additional work includes:

  • Fence installation
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation
