WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Edgemont High School's Trey Aslanian and Ardsley High School's Drew Longo will be going for their fourth titles Sunday in the Section 1 Division II Wrestling Championships/State Qualifier.
The impending snowstorm forced the cancellation of Saturday's matches, said Section 1 wrestling chairman Eric Romanino . The Division II, or small-school championships, will be held Sunday at Irvington High School and the Division I or large-school championships will be at Pace University. Wrestling will begin 9 a.m. at both sites.
The sectional champs in each weight in both divisions earn an automatic berth in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships Feb. 22-23, at the Albany Times-Union Center.
Aslanian and Longo are the top two wrestlers in Division II and are seeded first at 120 and 138 pounds, respectively. Aslanian is also looking to become Edgemont’s first four-time Section 1 champ.
Edgemont, the 2011 and 12 runners-up, are a prime contender for the Division II title along with two-time defending champ Nanuet High School.
The Division I title will be hotly-contested between North Rockland and Yorktown high schools.
The Cornhuskers go into Sunday with four No. 1 seeds – 2012 170-pound champion Steven Sabella and 285-pound titlist David Varian, Joe Mastro (152) and Thomas Murray (182). Mastro and Murray were both sectional finalists last year.
New Rochelle High School's Nick Barbaria (106 pounds), Fox Lane High School's Tommy Grippi (145) and Ossining High School's Alex Delacruz (120) are all returning champions. Somers High School's Dylan Realbuto (126) finished third at 113 last year, but earned a wild card and won the state title.
Grippi comes into sectionals looking to join older brother, Joey, as a two-time champion and only seven wins away from 200 for his career.
Delacruz is seeded third in the 120-pound weight class. A victory over second-seeded Blaise Benderoth of North Rockland in the semifinals would set up a rematch of the 2012 113-pound final with top-seeded John Muldoon of Pearl River High School.
