Panas Volleyball Team Wins School's First State Title; Gets Hero's Welcome

The Walter Panas girls volleyball team received a hero's welcome Sunday after arriving home from Glens Falls with the first state championship in any sport in school history.

Unbeaten Panas won the Class A state volleyball by finishing the tournament undefeated with wins in nine straight games, including going 6-0 in pool play and 3-0 in the championship match.

The Panthers won the final 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23 against Long Island's Kings Park High School. Panas finished the season 21-0.

The Panthers were also honored with the team sportsmanship award by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Junior Yvette Burcescu was named tournament MVP. Senior Sabrina Patricello and Junior Julianna Bottarini were named to all-tournament team.

The Mohegan Fire Department, with the assistance of the Westchester County Police Department, escorted the team from the Annsville Circle in Cortlandt to Walter Panas High School on Croton Avenue upon their return from upstate.
