The city’s Girls’ Varsity Swim Team was recently honored as “scholar athletes” by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, school officials said.
To earn that title, all members of a varsity team must maintain a grade average of 90 or higher throughout the athletic season.
All 21 members of the swim team did just that, the district said.
The girls, and their coach, Chrisanna Hickey, were honored at ceremonies during the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Peekskill Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, January 19.
Each member of the team received a certificate from the state association noting her “outstanding scholastic achievement.”
“We often have a lot of student athletes receive individual awards, but it is a special pleasure to be able to give out a team award,” said Peekskill athletic director Lou Panzanaro, who presented the certificates.
Panzanaro, congratulating the team, told them that the school district was proud of them, and Hickey.
Hickey, who is in her first year of coaching the team, also had kind words for her students.
“This swim season has been extremely challenging for the girls and they’ve been working very hard,” she said.
“I’ve seen the effort they put in -- while they’re swimming they are also thinking about their academics,” Hickey said.
The girls worked hard “as a group in the pool and out of the pool,” their coach said, adding: “This is a fabulous accomplishment and I’m super proud of them and their achievements.”
The members of the team are: Alana Donabie, Annaleise Harvey, Ariana Lopez, Autumn Jacobs, Briana Jackson, Britney Diaz, Catherine Lively, Christina Murphy, Isabella Lopez, Jahzmine Parker, Jessica Fields, Josephine Holman, Kaitlyn Lehning, Kaitlyn Quezada, Kayani Alcantara, Kaylyn Vazquez, Maija Gaines, Marley Lazo-Murphy, Mya Guardino, Sammala Clarke, and Tiffany Johnson.
