Lakeland/Panas Runners Fly High At National Championships

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Lakeland/Panas Runners did well at the New Balance Indoor National Track and Field Championships.

Grace Bugara (11th grade Panas), Sunny Nagpaul (12th grade Lakeland), and Cameron Thompson (12th grade Panas) had strong performances this weekend at the New Balance Indoor National Track and Field Championships in New York City. 

On Friday afternoon, March 11, Bugara raced in the championship 5,000 meter run. Her time of 17 minutes and 23 seconds is a new school record. She finished in 10th place in the highly competitive race. Her average mile pace for the 3.1 miles, 25 lap race was a stellar five minutes and 35 seconds. 

On Saturday afternoon, March 12, Nagpaul competed in the emerging elite section of the mile. Her time of five minutes and four seconds is a season best. Sunny will be running for the University of Vermont next year. 

On Sunday, March 13, Bugara ran in the Championship division of the mile. She becomes the first female runner in school history to break the five-minute mile with a time of four minutes and 59.23 seconds. 

Thompson, New York State Champion, ends his season with a fantastic throw of 67-9.75, besting his state winning throw by three inches. He took ninth place against the best throwers in the country.
