High School Football Teams Open Practice Friday

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Summer vacation will come to a premature close Friday, as high school football players return to the gridiron for their first day of practice.

Double and triple sessions will be the norm during the next two weeks before school resumes Tuesday, Sept. 4, and Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The regular season begins Friday, Sept. 7, and Saturday, Sept. 8, and the Section 1 Football Championships will be held at Mahopac High School.

Croton (Class B) and Dobbs Ferry (Class C) are the defending champions in their respective classes. Both teams played for a state title last year. John Jay-Cross River (Class A) and Tuckahoe (Class D) were sectional finalists last year, and New Rochelle (Class AA) was upset in a semifinal.

John Jay-Cross River is one of the top teams in Class A going into the 2012 season. The Indians feature one of the top quarterbacks in Section 1 in senior Tyler Keech, as well as wide receiver Jack Lambert. The tandem showed their versatility last year.

Harrison and Rye will challenge in Class A, led by their quarterbacks. Senior Vinnie Nicita returns for his third season running Harrison’s offense. The strong-armed Nicita is always dangerous when he drops back to pass. Rye sophomore Andrew Livingston stepped into a starting role last year and helped lead the Garnets on a second-half surge to make the playoffs.
