Harter, who was an assistant at Somers High School last year under coach Chris DiCintio, replaces Kevin Downes, who resigned at Mahopac in March and was hired at Yorktown High School last month.

"I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Mahopac community," Harter said on Saturday. "Coach Downes did an excellent job of building a strong program at Mahopac, and it will be a big challenge to keep the tradition going.

"I appreciate the confidence that the Mahopac administration has placed in me for this job. I look forward to running a program at Mahopac that works hard and represents the school with class both on and off the court."

The new Mahopac coach is the son of former longtime NBA coach Dick Harter, who coached for several NBA teams and was the first coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 1988-1990. This is his first head coaching job at the high school level.

Harter was 224-213 at Pace and led the team to three Division II NCAA tournament appearances in 16 seasons before leaving in 2013. A Golden's Bridge resident, he also coached AAU this summer for the East Coast Panthers, an organization run by DiCintio.

Downes resigned after racially charged social media comments circulated following Mahopac's Section 1 Class AA semifinal loss to Mount Vernon. Downes led his teams to four Section 1 Class AA semifinal appearances.
