Archbishop Stepinac, Iona Prep Play For Chsfl Title

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Archbishop Stepinac and Iona Prep will play for the New York Catholic League football championship on Saturday while the Section 1 teams were knocked out of the state tournament over the weekend.

Stepinac (11-0), ranked second in New York, advanced to the Class AAA championship game with a 56-0 win over previously unbeaten St. Peter’s of Staten Island. Iona Prep (9-2) beat St. Anthony’s, 28-10, in the other semifinal.

The Crusaders and Gaels kick off at Fordham University on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Stepinac routed St. Peter’s behind a ground attack that churned out 332 yards. Brandon Coleman rushed for 115 yards on seven carries and a touchdown to lead Stepinac. Tyquan Ennis added 90 yards and a touchdown. Tyquell Fields and Kobe Miranda also ran for touchdowns.

Giancarlo Furlo (two) and Jesse Brown also caught touchdown passes for the Crusaders, and Daniel Negron returned an interception for a touchdown.

Robert Madison threw two touchdown passes and Stephon Smith rushed for 92 yards to lead the Gaels, who are ranked ninth in the state by MaxPreps. Madison completed 21-of-39 passes for 230 yards. Qaadir Sheppard caught 12 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

Stepinac defeated Prep, 35-19, on Oct. 4. The Gaels led 19-7 in the third quarter before Stepinac responded with 28 unanswered points.

Iona Prep holds a 39-26-1 edge in the longstanding rivalry. Stepinac won the CHSFL title in 1954, and Prep has won three times, the last coming in 2008.

In the New York state quarterfinal Rye fell to Cornwall, 21-17 in Class A. In Class C, Millbrook beat Woodlands, 42-23, and Tuckahoe fell to Chester, 36-21, in Class D.
