WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's that time of year again.

Students in Westchester will be heading back to school this week, with most schools opening the 2015-2016 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 2 or Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Peekskill Superintendent David Fine is looking forward to his first school year at the helm.

"It's very exciting," Fine said. "It's been a busy summer. We're making sure all of our systems aligned. Everyone is passionate and dedicated to our students and district."

Fine said the school's motto is A System Focused On Every Student Everyday.

"We are really excited about the work we've been doing," Fine said.

Seeing the kindergartners on  their first day of school is something Fine said he is looking forward to.

"That's what it's all about," Fine said. "Getting to meet and connect with students, accommodate to their learning style and connect with their families. It's very exciting."

Many districts grapple with how to ensure hundreds to thousands of students get home safely with all means of transportation factored in.

"We work closely with police, security, staff and faculty," Fine said. "Safety is paramount. We want to create a secure and safe environment to get to and from our schools."

Fine said his goal at Peekskill is to have grade level literacy and a 100 percent graduation rate by 2020.

"It truly takes a village of stakeholders to work together to focus on student successes," Fine said. "Those partnerships have been really wonderful."

The White Plains School District has several new administrators, including Deborah Auguarten as assistant superintendent for special education and pupil services and Myra Castillo as principal of Church Street School.

Matthew Cameron is the new athletic director for grades 7 to 12. The district also began training 32 teachers in Learner Active Technology Infused Classroom, related to the iPad.

Lakeland spent the summer under construction as part of Phase 1 of its safety and security bond.

George Washington Elementary and Lakeland Copper Beach Middle School were repaved and the track at Lakeland High school was resurfaced.

All entrances now have security windows and security vestibules, along with security lock sets in all classrooms.

About 20 new teachers have joined the Lakeland School District.
