PEEKSKILL, N.Y. --Lila Feder and Sienna Ritter who were both recently named Hillcrest Elementary School's "Artists of the Week."
The artwork of both girls is on display in the building at Hillcrest Elementary School.
Lila is a fifth-grader from Heydi Rodriguez’s class at Hillcrest. She writes "One of my influences about being an artist is that my dad is an artist. My dad makes a lot of art in our house, in our backyard; etc. I've gone to a lot of art shows in my lifetime. On my dad's side of the family, both my aunts and my grandfather are artists. I love art because I think it is a really important way to express yourself and I think everyone should be able to do that. My favorite way to make art is probably to draw or paint. I've known I wanted to be an artist ever since I discovered my dad was an artist. When I was little I drew, painted and colored a lot. I think at home it was really enforced, too!"
Sienna said she loves art "because you can create something new out of a mistake. My mom taught me to 'work with it' and have fun. Art can be frustrating, but it is part of the process. I also like the peace I feel when I am alone working on something. I can zone out until I hear my brothers."
"I remember being four when I decided I wanted to be an artist. I really got into working on school assignments that included projects. I also remember learning new techniques with Ms. Hogland and Ms. Lombardo. I used summers, and still do, to practice on my own time. Now I love holiday crafts, decorating and making cards," Sienna said.
