The school district message read in part, "The HPCSD is aware of a recent social media post regarding a school shooting.

"Additionally, there are other rumors regarding potential specific actions of at-risk students."

"Please be assured that immediate action is taken each time a threat or a rumor of a threat surfaces."

"In this instance, the administration in collaboration with the Hyde Park Police department was able to identify the source of the social media post, and the alleged threat was deemed to be unfounded."

"Our world has changed. Emotions are raw, tensions are high, and rumors are rampant. "Unfortunately, social media works both ways ….  it may create unfounded panic or it can be of assistance in identifying serious threats."

"It can be a source of misinformation or a place to publicly mourn as a nation. "We encourage all to use social media responsibly.

"Please be assured that every threat is taken as a viable lead; the administration and police take immediate action, and if warranted disciplinary measures are meted out swiftly. Additionally, please report all threats and any evidence of illegal activity to the Hyde Park Police Department. Please advise your children to report something if they see something, and be confident that action will be taken."

Police Chief Eric Paolilli added, "The Hyde Park Police Department has been actively working with the school district to investigate social media posts which have been circulating regarding violence at the high school.

"Through investigation, the department has identified the source of this information and have determined that there is no threat. This incident is an example of the critical need of any members of the community who have information regarding actions or persons who may pose a threat to our schools or community to immediately come forward.

"We take every report seriously and investigate them thoroughly, however; we can only investigate what we know about. Please, for the safety and well-being of the community- If you see something, say something," Paolilli said.
