PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- The school-shirt dress code program at Peekskill Middle School will continue and expand in coming months, according to the school's principal.

The new program has been a success with both students and parents so far this year, said Principal David Fine at Turdsay's Board of Education meeting.

"We held our breath," said Fine, "And the kids and the parents were truly amazing and came to school dressed appropriately and did the right thing Monday through Thursday for themselves and their school and stayed focused on serious on what they were supposed to do as students, which is their job."

Students have been required to wear school-approved polo shirts purchased through the district from Monday through Thursday, with students being allowed to wear other clothing on Fridays. The shirts were ordered by parents over the summer. The shirts continue to be sold from the school store outside the cafeteria.

With cold weather on the way, the school is now planning to order long-sleeve fitted shirts, hooded sweatshirts and cardigan sweaters, all with school logos. Some items will be created just for girls, with some colored pink. The new school gear, which in being created with student input, will range in price from $16-$30 and will have to be ordered through the school instead of purchased at the school store, according to Fine.

"We put together a student council for the shirts," Fine said. "We had about 20 very opinionated excited youngsters that provided different styles."

New polo shirts will not be four for $10 as the current ones that were bought in bulk at a steep discount but will probably range between $5-$7 per shirt, Fine said.

Students who are somehow without a shirt when they arrive at school are loaned a shirt from the main office that they must return.

The policy made planning easier for both students and parents, said Schools Superintendent James Willis.

"One of the PTO moms said that it's a lot easier to select what their child will wear Monday through Thursday because they already know," Willis said.

New merchandise will be made available for ordering once designs and prices are finalized, Fine said.
