Peekskill Schools Extend Bus Contract For 1 Year

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — The school buses are one of the services that will not be changing for Peekskill students when they head back to school this fall, the Peekskill City School District Board of Education decided at Thursday’s special meeting.

Mile Square Transportation, Inc., will continue to provide buses for home-to-school transportation as well as field and sports trips.

The board received other bids for transportation services in July, but certain complications led to their rejection.

“We extended the contract because the bid process got a little messy,” said Superintendent James Willis. The contract with Mile Square Transportation will be extended for the 2012-2013 school year, but the school board plans to put out bids in the fall.

“When you’re doing a multi-year transportation contract, you have to get voter approval,” as required by the New York State Education Department, said Willis,. Extending the contract for  a year will give the board time to execute the necessary procedures for approving a multi-year contract.

The search for other transportation companies is mostly a matter of costs rather than Mile Square’s performance, explained Willis.

“We were looking for bids anyway to try to get lower expenses,” he said, “but going out for a one-year extension is within our budget.”

The board also officially approved the appointment of Frederick Hutchinson as the new principal of Peekskill High School.
