Peekskill Schools Expect Jump In Kindergarten Enrollment

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – The Peekskill school district will see a modest jump in enrollment this fall, with much of it concentrated on the youngest students.

The district's total student enrollment for the 2012-13 school year stands at 3,047 students so far, up from 3,024 last year. Anita Prentice, the district's spokesperson, said Joseph Mosey, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, told her about the enrollment numbers.

Much of that increase can be attributed to the number of students signed up to start kindergarten this fall at Woodside Elementary School. The number of children starting kindergarten is up from 226 last year to 289 this year.

"We are already adding three kindergarten sections," Prentice said. "We've added two new teachers and brought down a first-grade teacher

New kindergartners will start with two half-days on Sept. 6 and 7 with dismissal at 12:15 p.m. The first full day is Sept. 9. Woodside will be running on new hours starting this year, from 9:20 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Breakfast will start at 8:45 a.m. for both kindergarten and first grade.

District officials said it was too early to draw a final conclusion as to what the final number of students will be since students are still enrolling and in some cases withdrawing.

"We had budgeted for 230 students, but some may be no-shows when school starts," Prentice said.
