The Peekskill City School District's Board of Education appointed Licopoli as the new interim superintendent during the board's regular meeting on June 18, according to a release from the school district.

Licopoli previously served the district for just over six months in 2011 and has most recently worked as the interim superintendent at the Arlington Central School District for the last two years, according to the release.

“It is really a joy for me to be returning to the Peekskill School District,” Licopoli said in the release. “I’m looking forward to coming back in what has been a tough time for this district, and turning a new page for Peekskill in collaboration with the Board of Education, administration, faculty, staff and parents and students."

The Board of Education also appointed Jacqueline Liburd Tuesday night as the new principal for Hillcrest Elementary School. Liburd will replace Michelle Zernone as of July 1, according to the release. Liburd has been with the district for almost five years and has served as the assistant principal for Woodside, Oakside and Hillcrest Elementary Schools, according to the district. Prior to her career in Peekskill, Liburd worked in the Mount Vernon and Yonkers school districts for more than 15 years.

Board President Joseph Urbanowicz said selecting Liburd for the position of Hillcrest’s next principal was, “an easy decision for the board to make,” and called Liburd a “good fit” for the job, according to the release.

“We made this decision based on the work Ms. Liburd has done in our district,” Urbanowicz said, according to the release. “She has filled in when she was needed on a number of occasions and we’ve had nothing but the highest praise in regards to her work.”

Liburd said she was excited for the opportunity to continue Zernone's work.

“I’m looking forward to building and nurturing an environment that fosters positive communications, critical thinking and positive behaviors in our children and continuing to build the strong relationships I have with parents and students,” she said in the release.
