PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A student from Peekskill High School spent her summer doing original research alongside scientists at New York Medical College in Valhalla.

Brittney Pauta, class of 2017, was accepted to participate in the college’s Summer Trainees in Academic Research (STAR) Program.

The five-week internship matches a student with a medical scientist/professor for the purpose of conducting original research.

Pauta tackled "The Evaluation of Genotoxic Potential of Various Chemicals in Chicken and Turkey Egg Genotoxicity Assays" with Tetyana Kobets, NYMC Assistant Professor of Pathology.

Pauta will use the original data they collected and analyzed to prepare a report for her Peekskill Science Research course, as well as for submission in numerous academic competitions.

Erum Hadi, who teaches Living Environment and Science Research at Peekskill High School, said the internship provided Pauta with an opportunity to gain research experience with real scientists in a professional setting.

“Working with real scientists at the high school level provides unique, practical experience to our students, and gives them the competitive edge for colleges,” said Hadi. “I’m very proud of Brittney for all of the hard work and dedication she has contributed to this project.”
