Peekskill High School Still Without Hot Lunches

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – Peekskill High School students are still making do with sandwiches almost a month into the school year, as cafeteria renovations have taken longer than planned.

School district leaders took up the issue at Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting after a parent asked for an update.

Greg Sullivan, assistant superintendent for business and administrative services, said he would meet with staff Wednesday and would get an update on the issue.

"I'll ask about the schedule for Con Ed for hooking up the gas so we can have some hot meals," Sullivan told those on hand.

Sullivan said that was one issue he knew was holding up the process, but there might be other issues he would find out about at the meeting.

Referring to the current lunch setup, school board President Joe Urbanowicz said: "That's unacceptable. I think we all agree that it's unfortunate that we're not serving hot food in the cafeteria, and hopefully by tomorrow we'll have an idea of when that's going to be rectified and have some kind of temporary solution to provide adequate meals for students."

Urbanowicz requested that a list of all issues holding up hot meals be sent to board members after Wednesday's staff meeting.

The official opening of the renovated cafeteria was Sept. 25. The cafeteria was a major part of a $3 million capital improvement project carried out in the schools over the summer. The cafeteria has new tables and chairs, benches, and a new kitchen that will serve a wider variety of foods for students.
