PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Peekskill officials and members of the city's fire department honored six safety-minded youngsters at Monday's Common Council meeting.
The annual fire safety poster contest was open to students of the Peekskill City School District, The Assumption School, Tutor Time Daycare and Aunt Bessie's Open Door Daycare and participation was once again strong.
"The children are given the challenge every year of putting together a poster with a fire prevention theme and message," said Peekskill career firefighter Pat MacLennan. "They do very well and it gives us a challenge of evaluating who's going to win year in and year out."
This year's contest winners are:
Kindergarten: Ilari Bezzubikoff, Woodside Elementary School
First Grade: Jennifer Esguivel, Woodside Elementary School
Second Grade: Blake Bedulieu, Oakside Elementary School
Third Grade: Daniel Jara, Assumption School
Fourth Grade: Camille Castillo, Hillcrest Elementary School
Fifth Grade: Stephanie Detres, Assumption School
The Pete Volkmann Award, the overall award named for the long-time career firefighter who started the contest 38 years ago, was given to Nataly Aucapina of Assumption School.
