Mitlak will work primarily in the elementary school buildings this year with students, teachers and administrators to enhance reading and writing instruction.

Mitlak has a background in a variety of educational settings. She entered the field almost 30 years ago and has been a researcher, a pre-K teacher, an elementary classroom teacher, a reading specialist for K-12 and an assistant professor in schools of education serving pre-service and in-service undergraduate and graduate students.

Most recently, Mitlak served as the director of curriculum and instruction for the Hastings-on-Hudson School District. Her passion for literacy brought her to join the Peekskill City School District team, and she looks forward to supporting all learners in their literacy development.

She has a Bachelor of Arts in art history from Vassar College, a Master's of Education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a doctoral degree in reading, language and cognition from Hofstra University. Additionally, she has school building and school district leadership certifications from SUNY Stony Brook.
