Barreto, who plans to study health sciences and international relations at Harvard University, received the Chamber’s scholarship at an awards ceremony on June 4.
“The business community recognizes that by supporting these scholarships for the students of today, we are strengthening our future,” Deb Milone, Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce executive director, said at the event, according to the release.
“Maybe today I was standing next to the student who finds a cure for cancer or becomes President of the United States.”
Barreto hopes to become a biomedical researcher.
While at Peekskill High, she has been active with the school’s newspaper, the Academic Competition Club, the debate team, and the Latino Culture Club.
Barreto has also volunteered with Operation Christmas Child and the Peekskill Presbyterian Church.
“I’m excited; it’s so wonderful they’re willing to give back to the students and the community,” Barreto said in a press release.
“I’m very honored to receive this award.”
The Hudson Valley Chamber of Commerce also awarded $1,000 scholarships to five additional students.
- Caroline Barnes, Croton-Harmon High School;
- Jazz Munitz, Hendrick Hudson High School;
