Senior Wendy Yu is among 16,000 semifinalists who have been selected based on outstanding 2015 PSAT scores. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

The academically talented students now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth at total of $33 million. The awards will be presented next spring. About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of those will win a National Merit Scholarship.

"This recognition is another reminder of how committed our staff and community are to providing world-class education and opportunities to our students,” said Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter, adding he hoped the entire community “celebrates Wendy’s outstanding accomplishment.”

The high school also announced seniors Connor Anderson, Maximilian Borchardt, Jonathan Chung and Danielle Guida were named as commended students in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Principal James Mackin, in a post on the school district’s website, said everyone is “extremely proud” of all the students.

“Their hard work and dedication to their schooling has resulted in them being recognized for their academic excellence,” Mackin said.

About 34,000 students are recognized as “commended,” the principal said. To be “commended” you have to place among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“The young men and women being named commended students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a National Merit Scholarship spokesperson. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
