MONTROSE, N.Y. – Hendrick Hudson School District’s second bond referendum of the 2011-2012 school year will appear on the May 15 ballot, requesting voters approved $717,000 worth of roof repairs and bus replacements.

“They’re in pretty bad shape, they leak profusely and it’s been an ongoing issue for a while,” said spokesperson Rick McCormack about roofs at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary and the gym of Hendrick Hudson High School.

The newest referendum is split into two proposals, one for $500,000 for roof repairs in Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary and the Hendrick Hudson High School gym. The second other referendum is for four vehicles worth $217,000, including one wheelchair accessible van, two dual rear wheel vans and one Suburban SUV.

As part of the plan, a line item on the ballot will ask that voters allow the district to return $666,391 to taxpayers, before borrowing money for repairs. District officials expect roof repairs to cost Town of Cortlandt homeowners $1.23 per $1,000 of assessed value, meaning a house with a market value of $440,000, assessed at $7,700, would pay an additional $9.47 per year.

For houses in Peekskill, roof repairs would cost taxpayers 62 cents per year, or an additional $4.77 per year for a home with a market value of $207,000, an assessed value of $7,700.

The roof repairs were originally part of the district’s $25.1 million “Implementing the Vision” strategic plan, which was turned down in December 2011. The “Implementing the Vision” bond would have constructed a performing arts center and installed synthetic turf athletic fields, along with several other upgrades and repairs.

After the 2-to-1 failure of the bond, the district surveyed the public to determine what kinds of repairs would be politically feasible. Roof repairs, septic repairs and technology networks had the broadest support, with 80 percent of those surveyed, according to survey results published by the district.

The Hendrick Hudson School District budget vote will take place May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School gym.

Roofing Dublin:

The costs of steel roof structure vary from one designer to another based on a lot of aspects. Given this situation, it is essential that the cost of steel roof structure be analyzed so that customers may know whether or not it is affordable. Study this content to know more about it.

Pointermama:

The school board is more interested in spending taxpayer dollars that saving. Those roofs should have been fixed ages ago but the bloody overpriced teachers need their raises so they can buy pot from other teachers at the school. Sick of throwing good money after bad. I wish they would fire all of these overpriced lazy teachers and bring in a whole new crop of teachers who will actually appreciate their jobs and the morons in the maintenance dept should be able to do a better job. Thank God McCann is retiring otherwise he would have been forced to step down anyway. What a jerk!

Fly on the Wall:

I have to agree with Casey, Having a referendum to do repairs that should be included in a annual budget is SHAMEFUL. The entire board is to blame for this incompetence and quite frankly should step down.

sayitsnotso:

No way will they, they always are saying they do not have enough citizens comments and they when they receive them they ignore any and all ideas unless it is in complete agreement with theirs.

kasey38:

This is what the referendum should have been last time. But I am extremely disappointed with the school administration that this problem has been going on for a long time. Do they maintain their homes like this? The leaks should not have been let to continue; the problems do not disappear with time.

sayitsnotso:

They said they were formulating the bond issue for the sports and entertainment complex over two and a half years. They put the roofs in to try to divert attention from the unnecessary expenditures hoping people would just vote yes to do the repairs. For all those years, they let the buildings, and grounds deteriorate when they should have been repairing them.
