Sound Shore Medical said it will continue to operate business as usual and said the business transaction would not affect the day-to-day operations of the hospital. It will remain a nonprofit hospital system, a statement said. “In the long term, we believe that this acquisition will ultimately strengthen SSHS, leading to growth and enabling us to better serve the southern Westchester communities.”

Sound Shore Medical Center filed for Chapter 11 protection Wednesday, and Montefiore filed a petition in federal bankruptcy court to buy the assets of the Sound Shore Health System, the parent company that owns the New Rochelle and Mount Vernon hospitals, according to a release from Montefiore Medical Center.

The Westchester-based health system has about 450 beds combined, the report said. Once absorbed, Sound Shore Medical, Mount Vernon Hospital and Montefiore will result in an nearly 2,000-bed health care system, Newsday reported.

Montefiore Medical Center is committed to “keeping community-based hospitals vibrant,” a release from Sound Shore Medical Center said. “We are proud to add our widely acclaimed medical services to Montefiore’s extensive and innovative academic healthcare delivery system.”
