Gardiner Family in Two Places at Once

CICERO, N.Y. - Tim Gardiner was enjoying the play of daughter, Jessica, and her Mamaroneck field hockey teammates as they won their New York State Tournament Class A semifinal over Liverpool on Saturday.

Following the post-game celebration, including a huge embrace of Jessica, Gardiner’s thoughts turned to older daughter, Charlotte, and wife Nancy.

For the second time in three weeks, Tim and Nancy Gardiner were at separate sites watching Charlotte and Jessica play. Charlotte, a junior, starts for the Middlebury College field hockey team. Middlebury was playing Bowdoin in an NCAA Division III semifinal, also Saturday, in Dudley, Mass. “It would be nice if we could both be together, but both teams keep winning, which is a good problem to have,” Tim Gardiner said.

Tim Gardiner was at Arlington High School when Mamaroneck defeated Ossining to win its fourth consecutive sectional title. Meanwhile, Nancy Gardiner was with Charlotte as Middlebury played Bowdoin, and former Mamaroneck teammate, Cathleen Smith, in the New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey final.

The Gardiners stayed in contact throughout Mamaroneck’s game. Tim Gardiner said he and his wife email each other when someone scores, instead of texting throughout so they don’t miss any of the action. Tim Gardiner said he wishes he could beamed up, like on the old television show, Star Trek, to Charlotte’s game.

“Middlebury has a very good team and I think they have an excellent chance to win it,” Tim Gardiner said. “I wish I could be there to watch it.”
