Bronxville Real Estate Broker Jumps At Invitation To Visit Cuba

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- When Bronxville Real Estate principal broker Leah Caro opened the email inviting her on a trip to Cuba with a group of Realtors, she deliberated for only seconds before responding.

Caro will leave on the seven-day trip on Sept. 21 and will spend five days in Cuba. Caro is among 15 people on the trip, which was offered by the National Association of Realtors. The trip was offered to select Certified International Property Specialists.

Caro will meet with experts on real estate law in Cuba, learn about the country’s commerce and social housing projects and be immersed in the entire culture of the country.

“There are several thousand CIPS agents in the country, so I was highly flattered to be invited,’’ Caro said.

The trip is organized by People To People, which received a special license from the U.S. Department of Treasury to offer trips to Cuba to citizen ambassadors.

Most of the activities will be centered around Havana, with day trips to schools, hospitals, churches and markets, according to the People To People website.

Few Americans are fortunate to have the option to venture into Cuba, a Communist nation since 1959. Caro recognized this was her chance to visit the country.

While she's looking forward to the cultural side of the trip, Caro will be taking note of the nation’s real estate and business practices. She's hopeful that she can learn more about her trade from an international perspective.

“Real estate is an important industry, and as an industry professional this is a terrific opportunity to learn more about how real estate is conducted in other countries,'' Caro said. "One of the things I’ve learned on previous trips is that the United States is the most transparent system in the world when it comes to real estate. Our private property rights are the strongest and our legal system is the strongest. I’m intrigued by Cuba because it is a Communist country.”

Caro joined Bronxville Real Estate in 1992 and became the President and Principal Broker in 2001. She was the President of the Westchester/Putnam Association of Realtors in 2009-10, the Chair of the Professional Standards Committee for the New York State Association of Realtors and a Director at the State and National Associations.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is being a Certified International Property Specialist,’’ Caro said. “I’m proud to be able to use that to go on this trip. I’m going to get a real peek at Cuba, not just a tourist’s peek. It’s a very exclusive trip.”
