Registered Republicans and Democrats will have a decision to make, as candidates for two Senate districts and an Assembly district vie for a spot on the ballot in the general election in November.

In the 36th Senate district, which encompasses parts of Mount Vernon, four Bronx-based Democrats are looking to fill the seat vacated by former Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson, who now works under Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In the 40th Senate district, which includes a section of northern Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties, Incumbent Sen. Terrence Murphy is waiting to determine whether he will be challenged by Democrat Andrew Falk, who has unsuccessfully run for Assembly seats twice, or former Pound Ridge councilwoman Ali Boak.

Lastly, registered Republicans in the 94th Assembly district Kevin Byrne - with an endorsement by the party - will be challenged by Carmel Town Board member Suzi McDonough. Regardless of the outcome of the primary, he will still appear on the ballot in November where he will be challenged by Democrat Brian Higbie.

In Mount Vernon, Judge Nichelle Johnson is looking to take over permanently after being appointed by Mayor Richard Johnson, though she is facing a challenge by longtime local lawyer Tamika Coverdale. In Harrison, incumbent Judge Joe Stout will square off against Christopher Rodier for the right to challenge Republican Richard Dionisio in November.

Meanwhile in Mamaroneck, the traditionally Democrat-heavy Village Board is being challenged by Republicans Maria Micone DeRose, Dennis Cucinella and Malte Stoeckhert. On the Democrat ticket, incumbent Trustee Leon Potok is being joined by Victor Dominguez and Kevin Waitt.

Come November, all eyes will be on the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, where Republicans Mitch Benson and Bruce Bendish and Democrat Tony Scarpino seek to permanently replace former DA Janet DiFiore, who is now the Chief Judge of the State Court of Appeals.
