PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Peekskill Common Council member Don Bennett, Jr. announced Tuesday that he will resign after a decade of service to the city, citing health issues.

In recent months Bennett had been seen less frequently in public as he battled complications from multiple sclerosis. He will be moving to live closer to his family, according to the statement.

“I want to thank Councilman Bennett for his outstanding service to the City and its people,” City Manager Anthony Ruggiero said in a statement. “While we’re sad to see Don go, we know it’s been difficult for him to carry out the responsibilities of office in the past year and respect his decision.”

Bennett, who was first elected to the Council in 2003, also served as Deputy Mayor of Peekskill from 2008-2011.

Bennett was active in several community organizations over the years including serving as president of the Rotary Club of Peekskill, vice chair of the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board Director at March of Dimes - Northern Metro Division, Food Pantry at Montrose VA Hospital, Peekskill Youth Bureau and as a Peekskill Housing Authority Board Member.

According to the Peekskill City Charter, a majority of the Common Council may appoint a person to temporarily fill the open seat vacated by Bennett.
