With 86 percent of the precincts reporting, the referendum was approved by a 61 to 39 percent margin, according to unofficial election results.

The referendum, allows the library to raise its budget by 2 percent as allowed under the state property tax cap, or $17,000.

The referendum is put up to a vote every year, said Field Library Executive Director Sibyl Canaan. The referendum requires library supporters to collect 600 signatures from residents, ten percent of the gubernatorial vote in the last election.

"This is not going towards staff salaries, it's not going towards raises," Canaan said Tuesday. "This is going towards the pension bills."
