Drew Claxton is a Democrat running for Peekskill Common Council. She has began serving on the city council in 1999 and is the longest serving Democrat on the council.

Why are you running for office? I am running for office because I love Peekskill. I have a good understanding of our community, its needs and its promise. I have represented the community well over the past 12 years, moving the City forward, focusing on economic development, programs for youth and seniors, and understanding the financial stresses of the national economy and keeping tax increases to a minimum.

How long have you lived in Peekskill for? Most of my life. Moved here when I was 8, left at 18 to join the Air Force and then to go to college. Came back when I was 28 and have been here ever since.

What do you love about Peekskill? What makes it the best place to live in Westchester? Peekskill has an amazing history, the best riverfront anywhere along the Hudson Valley, and is rich in the diversity and the creativity of its residents.

Do you have favorite restaurants or favorite places to shop in Peekskill? I like to eat at all of the restaurants – and each is my favorite depending on what I want to eat that night. I love to shop in the Coop. I shop at Peekskill Hardware and Dain’s Lumber when I’m working on my house. I shop at Jean’s Town when I’m with my grandchildren and nephews at the start of school. We do need to attract more retail.

What does Peekskill mean to you? Peekskill means home. It is where my mother chose to live, and where I’ve left and chose to return to, because it is a community that is welcoming to all people and is rich in diversity. It is a city that is rooted in its history, its resilience, and its creativity. It is a place where everyone can go and watch the sunset over the mountains. These are the assets that we must protect.

What do you love about Peekskill that makes you want to represent it in government? All of the above.
