The arrest came about when Deputy Sheriff Frank Gallipani stopped a speeding motorist on Secor Road in the Town of Putnam Valley on Friday, Nov. 4, around, 10:40 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
During the course of the traffic stop, Gallipani observed drug paraphernalia in plain view in the interior of the vehicle, the sheriff's office said.
The deputy determined that the driver, identified as Alisa L. Michalko, was in possession of a controlled substance and hypodermic needles, according to the sheriff's office.
The suspect was taken into custody; she has been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, and criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument, both misdemeanors, the sheriff's office said.
Michalko was processed at the PCSD Nelsonville Substation and released in her own recognizance, according to the sheriff's office.
The defendant is scheduled to appear in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court to answer the charges on Tuesday, Nov. 29, the sheriff's office said.
If found guilty of the allegations, Michalko could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for each charge.
