Da’Quan Johnson, 25, a member of the GMF street gang, was sentenced on Friday in White Plains federal court to three decades in prison for his role in a racketeering conspiracy and for conspiring to murder rival gang members which resulted in the death of Tyrone Arthur.

According to U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the GMF, along with another street gang, controlled crack cocaine and marijuana distribution in and around the Schlobohm Housing Project, including the area of Palisade Avenue known as “the Strip.” During their time in Yonkers, they had multiple disputes with rival gangs in southwest Yonkers.

The disputes - which included gangs in the Cottage Place Gardens, Warburton, Highland and Riverdale Avenue neighborhoods - resulted in multiple violent incidents that included assaults, stabbings and shootings.

In December 2013, there was a shooting in GMF territory, allegedly by members of the Highland Avenue gang. As retaliation, Johnson and other GMF members responded, shooting into a crowd that had congregated for a candlelight vigil in Highland territory. One of the bullets struck Arthur in the chest, killing him.

Six months later, Johnson and two others were indicted in connection to the murder. Johnson will serve 20 years in prison on the racketeering conspiracy and 10 years in prison on the murder charge, followed by three months of supervised release.

In a statement, Bharara praised members of the FBI’s Westchester Violent Crimes Task Force, the Yonkers, Peekskill and New York City Police Departments.

“Da’Quan Johnson was a leader of a violent, vicious street gang that terrorized the streets of southwest Yonkers with shootings, assaults, and drug dealing. On December 27, 2013, Johnson and his fellow gang members participated in a shooting that resulted in the senseless murder of an innocent man, Tyrone Arthur,” he said. “ Thanks to the hard work of the FBI and Yonkers Police Department, Johnson and the other members of GMF have been brought to justice.”
